乌鸡国“国王”冷落皇后，又不许太子和母后相见，往日的夫妻、父子情似乎都已付之流水。唐僧师徒投宿禅寺，夜半时分，唐僧恍惚入梦：只见芭蕉树下一口古井，青烟中一位已故的国王时隐时现，向唐僧诉说了被妖道推落井中的往事，恳请为他复仇。在太子进香之时，唐僧将太子请入禅房，出示已故国王交给唐僧的信物，太子偷偷与母后见面，述说了真情。八戒潜入水井，背出了国王的尸身，并从太上老君处求来还魂丹，国王复活了。夫妻、父子沉浸在团圆的幸福里。妖道以失败告终，假国王原来是文殊菩萨的坐骑青毛狮所变。
