火焰山阻挡着唐僧师徒西进的去路。只有铁扇公主的芭蕉扇才能灭火、生风、下雨。猴王以为与牛魔王有结拜之情，借扇定能如愿，谁知反被公主挥动宝扇，将他一吹九万里，直吹到小须弥山。悟空二次借扇，变作小虫，随茶水进入公主肚中，公主疼痛难忍，只得答应借扇。谁知借来的却是一把假扇，愈扇火愈大。悟空变做牛魔王形状，第三次去到芭蕉洞，公主责怪牛魔王不该迷惑玉面狐狸，后又将宝扇交付“丈夫”保管。悟空得扇，欢天喜地地走下山坡。真牛魔王得知宝扇被骗，也连忙追赶悟空，他变成八戒模样，又拿走了扇子。悟空十分懊恼，与牛魔王一场酣战，牛魔王苦战不胜，铁扇公主终于答应借扇。火焰山烈火熄灭，林木返青，唐僧师徒又能够前进了。
